NO SURPRISES ACT

As of January 1, 2022, under Section 2799B-6 of the Public Health Service Act, federal law offers important protections against “surprise billing” and “balance billing.” In many situations, when you receive emergency care or are treated by an out-of-network provider at an in-network facility, you are protected from being billed more than your in-network cost share.

These protections are part of the No Surprise Billing Act and are designed to help you avoid unexpected medical bills. You have the right to:

  • Receive a clear explanation of any out-of-network charges
  • Be informed about your estimated costs in advance, when possible
  • Dispute certain charges that you believe to be incorrect
