UCGH Awarded $1 Million Grant to Start Behavior Health Clinic

Union County General Hospital is thrilled to announce the hospital has been awarded a grant from the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) for $1 million to go towards start-up expenses for a new Behavior Health Clinic. UCGH and the Eastern Plains Council of Governments (EPCOG) worked together to apply for the grant, which will be paid out over four years at $250,000 each year.
“We are thrilled to see this investment in Union County. Access to behavioral health care is essential to the well-being of our region, and this new clinic will provide vital resources close to home. EPCOG is honored to partner with Union County General Hospital and support efforts that strengthen services for our communities,” shared Sandy Chancey, Executive Director of EPCOG.
“The addition of behavioral health as a core service alongside the hospital’s other specialties is a crucial step in addressing the region’s needs,” said grant writer Kate Bailey, CEO of Emerald Health Partners. “Emerald Health Partners is honored to have supported EPCOG in securing this funding and grateful to contribute to a sustainable solution for Union County.”
Behavior Health Clinics specialize in treating mental health and substance use disorders, serving patients with a systematic approach to whole body health that includes mental and physical care. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated 53 million Americans are living with mental illness, yet only 40% are receiving treatment. Unfortunately, in rural areas where they’re needed most, behavioral health services are often unavailable.
Data shows there is a clear link between mental health challenges and medical issues, showing both the need and benefit of behavioral health care for overall patient health. The HRSA grant will provide life changing opportunities for Union County and surrounding areas, providing essential services to patients in need.
Tammie Chavez, New Mexico CHC Market CEO, stated, “This is such great news for the communities we serve and an exciting opportunity for UCGH. The Behavior Health Clinic will offer important services for our patients.”
UCGH looks forward to sharing more updates and providing behavioral health care to patients soon.
